Story, Indiana- The Story Inn
December 27th, 2005
 The
Town of Story Indiana was founded in 1851 with a land grant to Dr.
George Story by President Fillmore. As the town grew it reached
it’s heyday in the years 1880-1929 and had two general
stores, a church, schoolhouse and post office. In 1929 the Great
Depression hit and the town never recovered. Much of the land
surrounding Story was left behind and was eventually turned into Brown
County State Park. The town limped through the better part of the 20th
century without being modernized or updated with new structures. It essentially
looks the same today as it did 100 years ago. The one surviving general
store was eventually bought and renovated into what it is today, The Story Inn.Hoosier Paranormal Research was lucky enough to be allowed to spend the night at the Inn and do an investigation. The Inn has 4 rooms upstairs in the old General store and a few outbuildings that have been turned into cottages. Each room upstairs has a ledger kept in the room for guest to record their stay at Story. All ledgers, once full, are put away for safekeeping. For years there have been stories recorded in these ledgers of ghost that haunt the Inn, particularly the ghost of “The Blue Lady”. This has been a local legend for years and has been published in local papers and one national magazine. During our interview with the owner and employees of The Story Inn we were shown and allowed to read some of the ledgers stored away from years past. Some guest did not encounter anything while others were sure they had encountered something supernatural. What we found amazing is that the guest were from all parts of the country and had no ties to each other but still had these strange things happen to them. Hoosier Paranormal also spoke with three current employees to see if they had any stories. One said she has had nothing happen to her but one of the chefs said that she was cooking in the kitchen one morning when suddenly the door flew wide open and slammed against the wall. Another employee said that he was in the kitchen area when a plate of spaghetti flew off the counter striking him in the hand. He had the scar to prove it and showed us. We also learned in our interview that the most active room in the Inn was not the Blue Lady Room but the Morrison/Kelly room. The owner himself told us that he had captured high EMF readings in the bathroom area. Ledgers from the Morrison/Kelly room tell of strange noises through out the night. Also learned in our interview was the fact that Doc Story’s house is also active along with the barn out back and the Old Mill building next door. The owner’s wife confirmed that lots of strange things occur in the house (they live in it) and we hope to return in the future and conduct an investigation of that house and some of the cottages. We were shown the headstone of a young boy who died in the mid 1800’s. The grave marker was found in the barn and was being used as a counter weight for bales of hay. His grave has yet to be found. The night of our investigation began by conducting a walk through of the Inn and taking some base temperature and EMF readings. We found some natural phenomena occurring in the Inn that was able to debunk some of the alleged activity-taking place. High EMF readings were recorded in the Morrison/Kelly bathroom because of a major power source on the outside of the bathroom wall. Also in the Morrison/Kelly room when water is ran in the bathroom sink the pipes make some very strange knocking noises. We also discovered that walking in the Hedrick bathroom the floor creaks and sounds like someone is walking up the main stairway. We had been shown a photo from a recent guest in the Blue Lady Room that shows a possible apparition but we discovered from our own pictures that a large dresser mirror was giving off a reflection from the camera flash causing some strange thing to appear in photos. The investigators present for the night were Kenny, Greg, Shanon, and Robert. Equipment used was video, digital and 35mm cameras, night vision video, Digital Voice Recorders, EMF detectors, and temperature devices. Findings: The investigation began at 7pm with the outside area, which included the barn, old mill building, and Doc Story’s examination room. 7:35pm Shanon sees an Orb go across the wall in Doc Story’s exam room.  11:27pm Greg sees some sort of red dot on the inside of the door in The Blue Lady Room. He is able to snap a digital picture, which later reveals what we believe to be an Orb. Robert would see the same thing later in this room. 12:00am An EVP captured in The Blue Lady Room by Kenny. We are not sure of the first part but can make out the word “floor” at the end of it. 12:11am EMF spike captured by Kenny while sitting in a chair in the Hedrick room. 2:20am Greg takes a digital picture in the barn and captures a dust Orb. This is the only photo taken by any of us during the investigation in the barn that reveals anything close to an orb or dust particles. 4:34am EVP of a female is captured in the Morrison/Kelly room by Kenny and Robert. The message seems to be indistinguishable to make out. This EVP was also captured on the night vision high 8 camera. 7:51am EVP recorded in The Blue Lady room by Greg. The room was securely shut with no one in it at the time. We believe it might say, “Help Me or God bless” you decide for yourself. 8:02am EVP captured in The Blue Lady Room by Greg. Once again the room was shut off with no one in it. This one says “I” Conclusion: Hoosier Paranormal was able to debunk some of our findings along with some of the stories from previous guest but we also captured some solid scientific evidence. We had a strange feeling of being followed around the property by something unseen. That gave us an uneasy feeling at times. We also smelled baby powder in the Morrison/Kelly room that we could not explain. Hoosier Paranormal believes that based on our evidence, the history and volume of guest accounts and employees accounts that The Story Inn is not only haunted by The Blue Lady ghost but also has a 2nd male spirit that is causing an intelligent haunt. Nightshot, 9 HQ digital voice recorders, 1 Digital EMF, 1 Tri-Axis
field meter, ambient thermometers, K2 meter and remote weather station.

investigation
was December 27th, 2005 and we felt it was time to revisit this old Inn
as it gave us more than a few pieces of evidence of the
paranormal. It gave us the memories of what it is really like
to
be living human beings looking for ghosts.
Investigation Time
LineOn this return visit, December 30th, 2009, the team decided to get their tanks full at the Harvest Moon Pizzaria in downtown Nashville. Following dinner, we drove back to the Inn for equipment unload and a briefing on where to place the voice recorders and static cameras. Once the plan was in place and the equipment was set, we started recording at 11:00 pm. Investigators present this night were; Elisa, Greg, Robert, Shanon and Kenny. Also on this night was the "Blue Moon". A name given to the second full moon in any month that has thirteen full moons in that calendar year. Normally, there are twelve full moons in a calendar year. Since there are more than roughly eleven extra solar days each year compared to the lunar year, these extra days accumulate thus resulting in an extra full moon every two or three years. Conicidentally, HPR investigated on this night. Did it make any difference? We will never know that for sure. What we do know is that we did capture some pretty good evidence. Also a note of interest- There was a log in one of the ledgers from guests a week before our arrival of a daughter and mother using a Ouija board trying to conjure the spirits of the Inn. What's interesting is the name that surfaced on their board was "Hester Bar" and Elisa researched the Story, Indiana Census and found the name, "Hester Barkes", born in 1868. During the entire investigation, Shanon volunteered to be audio documentist while Robert was video documentist. For the most part, we stayed together all night. Since it was raining and fairly cold, we decided not to investigate the barn or Doc Story's exam building. However, we all did briefly visit the exam building for a group photo. Hoosier Paranormal had the entire upstairs to ourselves and was locked at all times. At
11:00 pm, the investigation officially began in the Morrison/Kelly
room. There are four rooms in the Story Inn. The
four rooms
are: Morrison/Kelly, Liber, Hedrick and the Blue Lady.
We
began an EVP session in the Morrison/Kelly room at 11:10 pm.
It
was conducted by Greg. All investigators were present and,
for
the most part, stayed together all night. At 11:12 pm,
Shanon, Elisa and Kenny heard a cough
that came from the
upstairs. We all were in the Morrison/Kelly room.
At 11:16
pm, Shanon heard a whisper but it turned out to be an
investigator. At 11:30 pm, the EVP session ended
and we
decided to go to the sitting room atop the steps near the Blue Lady
room. Before leaving the Morrison/Kelly room, at 11:31 pm,
there
was a "hit" on the K2 meter. At 11:32 pm, we
arrived in the
sitting room and also at that time, an EVP was captured. We believe it
to say, "I
know" at 30 seconds. Kenny conducted an EVP session
beginning at
11:33 pm.
At 11:42 pm, Kenny and Elisa heard a noise that seemed to
come
from the Morrison/Kelly room. At 11:47 pm, Shanon
felt the
sensation of the couch he was sitting on was moving or vibrating.
At 11:56 pm, Shanon proposed that someone go to the
Morrison/Kelly bathroom alone with the documentary camera to conduct an
EVP session while the rest go to the
 Blue
Lady room. At 11:57
pm,
Greg saw a shadow in the sitting room by the dresser.
At
12:00 am, Kenny, Greg and Shanon entered the Blue Lady room
while
Elisa and Robert set up the camera in the Morrison/Kelly bathroom for
an EVP session. Also as we entered the room, Shanon asked,
"We
shut that light off last time?" Greg replied, "ah, we might have shut
it off." Then Shanon said, "I think we did." Afterwards, you can hear a
voice say, "Greg
did."
An EVP that we captured while entering the Blue Lady room referring to
the blue light in that room. At 12:02 am, Robert entered the Blue Lady
room.
At 12:04 am, Robert began the EVP session in the Blue Lady
room.
At 12:11 am, Kenny checked the outside temperature. It was
36º and raining. At 12:21 am, Elisa entered the Blue
Lady
room. During her EVP session in the Morrison/Kelly bathroom,
She
claimed to have heard what sounded like a bell ringing. There
were holiday bell decorations hanging on each of the doors which could
have been the source of this noise. She also had the taste of
a
German pickle in her mouth. At 12:22 am, we decided to take a
break. We returned to our "base" room for snacks and drinks
which
was the Liber room. At 12:24 am, Elisa pulled out a can of
guacamole chips when Shanon said, "Guacamole". Right after,
an EVP
occured repeating Shanon. We remained in the Liber room until
12:50 am when we decided to take an outside trip to Doc Story's
examination room. We didn't stay long as it was chilly and
raining. At 1:02 am,
we returned to the Inn. At
1:04 am, we
decided to investigate the Hedrick room with an EVP session. Elisa
would conduct the session and began at 1:07 am. At 1:13 am,
the K2 lights flickered. At 1:17 am, Robert and
Kenny
exited the Hedrick room to change the video tape in the Morrison/Kelly
room. They retured to the Hedrick room at 1:20 am.
At 1:29
am, Greg heard what sounded like a female voice.
Nothing
was captured on our voice recorders. At 1:33 am, Elisa stated
that the room was getting colder. She felt really cold.
At
1:42 am, Elisa heard some noises that came from downstairs.
At
1:44 am, Greg suggested we go to the Blue Lady room and play back the
EVPs that we captured during our first investigation to see if that
would provoke any activity. At 1:45 am, we all were leaving
the
Hedrick room and heark a squeek. Back-tracking, however, we discovered
it was the bed as one of the investigators was setting on the bed.
At 1:46 am, we entered the Liber room to get the laptop.
At
1:47 am, we entered the Blue Lady room to conduct an experiment by
playing back and looping the EVP that was captured on our first
investigation to see if we get a reaction. Kenny set up the
laptop for audio playback. At 1:53 am, The
documentary
camera shut off and came back on without explaination. There was no
activity on the K2 meter. At 1:54 am, we began looping the
EVP on
the laptop and also began an EVP session. Until 2:01 am, we
played various EVPs from our previous investigation but it turned up no
results. At 2:07 am, Shanon felt  a
pretty good cold
spot
next to him. He asked Elisa to see if she could feel it on his right
side. At 2:08 am, Elisa stated she heard some noises that was
coming from downstairs in the dinning area. At 2:11 am,
the
K2 meter lights flickered. At 2:15 am, the K2 meter hit three
lights as the documentary camera's tape ran out. Robert
changed
the tape. At 2:20 am, we heard what sounded like
thunder or
a door closing downstairs. At 2:21 am, Kenny
checked for
lightning strikes on his cell phone and noticed that while downloading
his data, the K2 meter was flickering up to three lights.
A
pattern was beginning to emerge. After a few experiments and
discussions, we establish that there is a correlation between the K2
meter activity and cell phone use. At 2:29 am, we heard a
thump,
thump sound. At 2:30 am, we decide to check all the doors to
see
if any of them had closed. At that time, we went to the Liber
room and experimented more on the cell phone and K2 meter. We checked
to see if the K2 meter would react to a text message sent by a cell
phone. It did but the further away the cell phone, the less
effect it had on the K2 meter. We continued debating the cell
phone/K2 meter interference for several mintues in the Liber room.
At 2:54 am, Kenny and Robert returned to the Morrison/Kelly
room
to change the video tape in the camera in that room. At 3:16 am, we
decided to move to the Blue Lady room and hang out to listen for noises
in the attic that's just above the room. We spent about 20
minutes in the Blue Lady room when Shanon suggested going to the
Morrison/Kelly room for a final EVP session before turning in for the
night.
At 3:36 am, we arrived in the Morrison/Kelly room.
On entering the room, Greg commented that the desk chair the
was
marked earlier had not moved. At 3:37 am, the final EVP session for the
night began. At 3:40 am, Shanon heard a noise that sounded
like
it came from the bathroom. Robert got up to check the bathroom but
found nothing unusual. At 3:50 am, there was activity on the K2 meter.
There were no cell phones on at that time. At 4:03 am, the
investigation was called. Voice recorders were placed in each of the
rooms for the remainder of the night while we slept. At 4:29 am, while
Robert was setting his alarm for the next morning's wake-up call, he
claimed he felt a touch in the center of his back. "It felt more like a
poke", said Robert. Viewing the video footage of the
Morrison/Kelly room of Robert, you can clearly see the moment he was
touched as his shirt moved. (see video below) At 5:04 am,
while
we were all sleeping, an EVP was captured in the Morrison/Kelly room.
We believe this EVP is saying, "Greg".
We got up and packed at 9:30 am. While breaking down the equipment, we
placed a voice recorder in the Blue Lady room again hoping to capture
another EVP. However, we were unsuccessful this time.Findings We captured several EVPs and one video during our investigation. The video of Robert's shirt moving in the Morrison/Kelly room at 4:29 am. An EVP in the Morrison/Kelly room at 5:04 am saying, "Greg". An unexplainable "cough" in the Morrison/Kelly room at 11:12 pm. An EVP in the sitting room at 11:32 pm saying, "I know". An EVP at 12:00 am in the Blue Lady room as we entered the room saying, "Greg did". And a repeat of the word, "guacamole" in the Liber room at 12:24 am. With these new pieces of evidence added to our findings from our previous investigation, we feel that the Story Inn is a haunted location. Investigation #3 (Case 10c)
Story, Indiana, The Story Inn, October 30th, 2010  HPR
traveled back to Story, Indiana for their third installment of an
ongoing investigation of this rustic bed & breakfast.
This night, however, was a special night for Hoosier
Paranormal as they were accompanied by two guests. The winner of this
year's ghost hunt contest, Lance Crider, was there to experience the
thrill of ghost hunting. Along with Lance's mother, April, he
was taken to a Nashville restaurant, Harvest Moon, then was brought
back to the Inn for a tour. Investigators present on this Halloween Eve investigation were; Kenny, Robert, Greg, Shanon, Elisa Haley and Ricky. Two teams were assembled then Elisa gathered the base readings throughout the Inn while Robert, Ricky, Kenny and Greg set up their video equipment. One camera was placed in the lounge area, one in the Blue Lady room, One in the Morrison-Kelly and one in the Hedrick room. One Sony HD nightvision camera was used for documentation as well as a Mini-DV camera. Voice recorders were placed in front of each video camera while each team member carried one. Base Measurments
Weather Conditions Recorded at 1:00 am 10/31/2010
The investigation officially began at 12:30 am. Team 1 included; Lance, April, Elisa, Robert & Kenny on documentary. Team 2 included; Ricky, Shanon, Haley & Greg on documentary. Team 1 began outside while Team 2 began inside the Inn. After each voice recorder began recording, each recorder was placed in their respective areas then each team assembled. Team 1- They decided to begin in the barn behind the Inn. They arrived in the barn at 12:41 am. Elisa conducted an EVP session in the loft area of the barn. At 12:45 am, during the EVP session, Kenny heard a disembodied female child's voice through his headphones. The voice was coming from inside the barn but away from the group. It also had echo qualities. The voice was captured on his digital voice recorder. At 12:59 am, they exited the barn and decided to head to Doc Story's Examination room which is located up the road from the Inn. After a brief EVP session in front of the building, Team 1 went back to the barn to see if more activity could be captured. At 1:29 am, Robert saw what looked like a foot in the loft. He was conducting an EVP session in the lower section of the barn and asked, "will you let us see you?". After that, he saw through a section that was missing a board on the wall in the loft, a dark silhouette of a foot coming down. Nothing was heard. At 1:37 am, they returned to the Inn and switched with team 2. After a few minutes hanging out in the sitting room (lounge area), the team decided to go the Blue Lady room at 1:47 am. Robert explained to the guests where the orb was seen during HPR's first investigation. They conducted an EVP session. At 2:09 am, the team decided to take a break. They moved to the Liber room where HPR set up the "base" area where snacks were served to the guests. It was this room where the EVP, "Guacamole" was captured in 2009. After the break, the team decided to try their luck in the Morrison-Kelly room. At 2:45 am, Team 2 came inside the Inn to take their break while team 1 was in the Morrison-Kelly room. Being right next to each other, they decided to move their EVP session to the Hedrick room instead. Nothing occurred during the EVP session. At 3:10 am, the team joined Team 2 in the Liber Room. While in the Liber Room, a strange noise occured at 3:20 am that sounded like a champaign bottle cork popping or ping pong ball being thrown down the hall of the Inn. It was loudest on the voice recorder in the lounge area. Finding nothing, the two teams decided to conduct solo EVP sessions. Team 1 had Kenny go into the Morrison-Kelly bathroom to conduct one and Team 2 had the guests, Lance and April, go into the Blue Lady bathroom to conduct an EVP session. These sessions began at 3:30 am. No further evidence was captured during these sessions. Team 2- Decided to begin their first session in the Inn inside the Blue Lady room. They conducted an EVP session and sat in the room until 1:09 am when they decided to move to the Morrison-Kelly room. It was very quiet during their session in the Inn. They listened for anything and conducted an EVP session in that room until team 1 entered the Inn at 1:37 am. They went outside switching with Team 1. Once outside, they worked their way around the back of the Inn looking for the headstone of Jonathan Hedrick. It's a headstone located on the back of the property with a hole in the top of it. They found it at 1:51 am. The team went into the upstairs of the barn at 1:53 am. Haley conducted an EVP session in the loft area. After leaving the barn, they walked to the examination building up the road from the Inn. The team ended their outside session at 2:45 am when they came inside to take a break in the Liber room. They met Team 1 going into the Morrison-Kelly room. After their break, Lance and April began their solo EVP session in the Blue Lady bathroom. At 3:45 am, they went into the Hedrick room. At 3:50 am, Shanon heard the coffee cups clanging together that were located in the lounge area on a bureau cabinet just outside the Hedrick room. At 4:00 am, the investigation was called and each member went to their room to turn in for the night. All cameras and audio recorders recorded for the remainder of the morning until we broke down the equipment the next morning at 8:30 am. Findings This night would prove to be a quiet night for HPR and their guests. There were some personal experiences, an unexplained sound that occured around 3:20 am and a disembodied voice that was captured on audio recorder and heard by Kenny at 12:45 am in the barn during an EVP session conducted by Elisa. |

This picture was taken at The Story Inn in the barn. You can see what
probably is a dust orb. We took hundreds of photos in the barn and this
was the only thing we got.
