Case #44  (44b)
Edinburgh, Indiana-  Masonic Temple and Opera House (Pixy Theater)
September 12th, 2009

HistoryPixy Theater
Built in 1907, the Masonic Temple and Opera House was owned and operated by Freemasons where their meetings and shows took place for 100 years. Although it remained under ownership of Freemasons until July, 2008, when Mike Harding purchased it from the organization, several companies managed the building throughout its span.  Named "Pixy Theater" sometime before the '40s, it survived a fire in July, 1944 and re-opened in mid April, 1945.  During its heyday, from the '40s through the mid '70s, double features were shown with a twenty minute intermission showing Bugs Bunny cartoons.  "I remember going there as a kid to watch several movies including, 'Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory' in 1971, 'Star Wars' and 'Jaws'",  remembers Kenny Wilson of Hoosier Paranormal Research. "It is a beautiful theater and it is a wonderful thing  to see Mike restore such a landmark of the community".
Reports
Throughout the '80s and early '90s, the theater was used for theatrical plays.  On several occasions, many actors and one stage hand had feelings of being watched and physical cold spots would occur on "house right", which is on the right side of the stage while facing the stage, and a make-shift dressing room on the back of the stage. The stage hand, which prefers to remain anonymous, also claims these feelings were also common upstairs in the "prop room",  a.k.a. Bice Sconce's office.  The stage hand also remembers being alone in the building and had feelings of being watched and followed.  It is even rumored that one production was canceled because of these sensations.
Equipment
Equipment used were: 2 Sony Nightshot cameras, 1 Mini DVD Nightshot, 1 Mini DV with Nightshot, 10 HQ digital voice recorders, 1 Digital EMF, 1 Tri-Axis field meter and ambient thermometers.
Investigation
Hoosier Paranormal Research is grateful to Mr. Harding for allowing us to come and investigate the theater.  Upon arrival, around 9:00 pm, Mike gave the group a tour of the building and a brief history. HPR members present this night were; Robert, Greg, Kenny, Elisa, Joe and our newest member, Ricky Stevens.  After our tour, we discussed where to place all cameras and voice recorders.    We split into two groups of three.  Team #1 included; Ricky, Robert and Elisa. A dedicated voice recorder was carried by both teams throughout the investigation.  Also, each team would consist of two investigators and one documentary camera man.
Investigation Time Line
All ten voice recorders started recording at 11:15 pm.  The video cameras soon followed. Team #1 started their investigation at 11:34 pm in the men's restroom on the second level.  At 11:37 pm, Robert and Elisa saw an "orb" then Elisa felt something touch her left arm then her right. At 11:42 pm, Elisa heard footsteps.  At 11:45 pm, team #1 left the restroom and proceeded to the office.  At 11:46 pm, a strange noise was picked up on most voice recorders but was loudest on the lobby recorder.  They spent about 15 minutes in the office then proceeded to the auditorium. They began an EVP session on the stage until team #2 entered the building at 12:16 am.  At 12:17 am, team #2 took over. Team #1 exited the building.  Team #2 consisted of Greg, Joe and Kenny.  Kenny was operating the documentary camera while Greg and Joe conducted an EVP session in the banquet room on the third level.  At 12:33 am,  Joe heard footsteps.  At 12:36 am,  Greg and Joe heard what sounded like water running. They get up to investigate the noise.  They entered the kitchen area at 12:38 am. when Greg stated that he didn't think the sound came from the kitchen.  They proceeded to the masonic room at 12:41 am.  At this time, the needle on the tri-axis field meter was jumping to 1 g.  They timed the jumps and discovered a 20-25 second cycle between jumps.  There seemed to be some appliance or device cycling at that rate. These cycles are known as "transients".   At 12:45 am, team #2 heard a voice. This VP (voice phenomena) was picked up by all recording devices in the masonic room.  At 12:56 am, they captured another voice.  This one was also picked up on all recorders in the area but was not heard at the time.  After 20 minutes, they decided to go down to the auditorium for a brief  EVP session.  This EVP session started at 1:11 am and  ended at 1:20 am.  At 1:25 am, both teams went outside for a break.  Elisa decided to leave the investigation as she had to get up for work. At 1:32 am, some members came in the building to check and change video tapes.  At 2:00 am, the investigation continued.  A new team was assembled which included; Greg as camera operator, Robert and Kenny investigated. At 2:05 am, they were at the East end of the masonic room on the third level. They were asking questions and listening for more voices.  At 2:19 am, Robert was holding his glasses, gently twirling them in his hand next to his right side when suddenly, a force knocked them out of his hand. They flew out with a force so great they slammed against the wall and landed on the floor nearly 7 feet from him.  We were so shocked we had to view the video to see if  it actually happened. At 2:29 am, we decided to go outside and let Joe and Ricky come in to investigate. At 2:32 am, Greg, Joe and Ricky came in to investigate.  They went to the masonic room and continued the EVP session with no activity. At 3:00 am, they went to the attic to investigate. After 15 minutes there, we called the investigation. The voice recorders were stopped at 3:20 am and we began breaking down the equipment.
Findings
We found two EVPs, a VP and had several experiences from hearing voices, hearing footsteps, being touched and Robert's glasses being knocked out of his hand.  We feel this building has paranormal activity and is most likely haunted.  More research is needed to confirm.

Investigation #2 (Case 44b)

Masonic Temple and Opera House (Pixy Theater)
October 31st, 2009

Investigation
On this second investigation of the theater, Hoosier Paranormal Research decided to have a fund raiser and sell raffle tickets to investigate along with HPR on this night.  The winner could have a friend along which they arrived around 10:00 pm.  Kenny gave the guests a tour of the theater before the investigation. The investigation officially began at 10:54 pm.  The first team to investigate along with our guests were:  Kenny, Elisa and Joe running documentary camera. The second team was Greg, Kelly and Robert on documentary camera.

Investigation Time Line
At 11:02 pm, team 1 went into the masonic room on the third floor.  Elisa sat in the chair on the east end of the room and conducted an EVP session.  At 11:19 pm, team 1 decided to go to the men's restroom on the second floor as earlier, Kelly had an uneasy feeling about going in there.  At 11:21 pm, team 1 conducted an EVP session in the men's restroom.  At 11:25 pm, Elisa was concerned about our K2 meter working and wanted to test it to the fuse panel. The only panel we could get a reading from was the power box on the stage where the meter pegged.  By this time, it was 11:29 pm.  Being in the auditorium, team 1 investigated on the stage. At 11:49 pm, they heard someone outside the back of the building singing.  At 11:52 pm, they noticed a slight drop in temperature just in front of the stage on "house left" but was not enough to signify anything paranormal.  At 11:57 pm, Greg radioed us and confirmed that there was music in town.  At 12:02 am,  team 2 radioed in for rotation and team 1 exited the building.  At 12:05 am, team 2 entered the office on the second floor. They conducted an EVP session with questions hoping to reveal the presence of any spirits like Keith "Hotdog" Barrett, the theater manager in the 1970s,  who has since died.  At 12:18 am, Kelly claimed that it started to feel "heavy" in the room and the feeling of being watched.  This continued for several minutes.  At 12:21 am, Greg commented, "It feels like it's gotten colder in here". At 12:23 am, the K2 meter had some activity but was not consistent.   At 12:29 am, they went into the projection room and Kelly smelled smoke or the smell of something burnt.  At 12:32 am, they went into the men's restroom on the second floor.  At 12:35 am, they decided to go downstairs and replace the documentary video tape and they noticed the strong smell of cherry candy in the stairwell as they proceeded down the steps. Later, they found a raspberry room freshener in the broom closet atop the steps.  After replacing the video tape, they decided to proceed to the organ pipe room behind the masonic room on the third floor.  They entered the pipe room at 12:41 am. Kelly had a hard time breathing in that room.  At 12:43 am, they entered the masonic room when Kelly announced she had a bad headache.    At 12:45 am, Greg said he heard a voice but it was not recorded on audio.  At 12:49 am, Kelly makes a comment that it feels like something is pushing on her chest.  At 12:50 am, Kelly feels a burning sensation on her chest.  At 12:52 am, they heard something that came from the inside but it was not recorded.  At 12:54 am, Robert saw what appeared to be a puff of smoke over one of our guest's head. She did not smoke.  At 12:56 am, Kelly felt something poke her in the back but her back was to the wall.  At 1:05 am, the team went downstairs into the lobby area.  Kelly wanted to see her neck and chest to see if she was burned. The others also came inside at this time. At 1:15 am, Joe and Elisa with Kenny on documentary went up to the office to investigate. The guests decided they wanted to take a break so it was only the investigators and Kenny.  Starting with an EVP session, they asked questions directed to Mr. Barrett. At 1:26 am, they decided to move to the banquet room.  When they arrived, they closed the blinds in the room to achieve total darkness in the room. This room was completely dark and quiet. They could have heard a pin drop anywhere in the building it was so quiet. At 1:48 am, the team left this room and went into the masonic room to investigate.  Again, hearing absolutely nothing, it was a very peaceful and quiet room.  At 2:00 am, the others radioed back  to the investigating team that they were going to make a coffee run.  At 2:09 am, the team decided to head back down to the lobby. When they arrived, the others had got back with coffee.  It was a chilly night with temps in the 30's. While in the lobby, at 2:11 am, the K2 meter lights jumped a few times.  At 2:16 am,  Robert, Kelly and Greg on documentary video and the guests, took over the investigation while the others waited outside in the van.  They took to the stage area where there were reports of cold spots and strange feelings.  They conducted an EVP session in front of the stage on "house right".  At 2:28 am, they were on the south side of the stage in back near the basement door.  They were considering going down in the basement but the documentary camera only had a few minutes of video left.  Robert was feeling a bit creeped out about going down which is very unusual. The steps go nearly straight down. He did go down with the K2 meter.  He felt spider webs and said it was very creepy.  He said it was very "spidery" down there.  He climbed back up the ladder and the team started working there way up to the masonic room at 2:35 am when they radioed the others to go to the back of the theater to shine a light on the back door to investigate lights that shown thru the rear curtain on the stage. Earlier, it was determined that the lights were shinning through the crack of the door which is located on the back side of the theater.  The lights were orange color, higher and more to the right than the ones shown thru with a flashlight.  It was never determined that it was a car.  After that, the team decided it was time to go and replace the documentary video tape then proceed up to the masonic room for a final investigation.  When they arrived at the top of the steps, at 2:44 am, the documentary voice recorder ran out of memory.  The rest of this report is based on my memory and the documentary video.  After reaching the masonic room, Kelly sat in the big chair on the east end of the room and prompted an EVP session with some provoking.  After a few minutes, she noticed a shadow on the wall to her left.  Not knowing whether it was hers or someone else's, she moved to see if it moved. When it didn't move, she became quite uneasy about sitting in that chair.  When she looked forward, she felt something grab her right arm. Out of panic, she jumped out of the chair and quickly exited the room along with the guests and Robert leaving Greg behind with the camera.  The other team came inside and joined the others and they all returned back to the masonic room when Elisa would try and provoke in the same chair when she felt the chair move as if it were shaking.  Feeling as if she was being picked on by being poked, grabbed, burning sensations and feelings of being watched over, Kelly decided to exit the building and end her participation in this investigation.   The others remained in the masonic room and Elisa continued provoking with no further success.  The investigation ended at 3:50 am after which tear down began. This was one of our longest investigations and the long process of going over the evidence was ahead.

Findings
A multitude of indexes were marked on our voice recorders and all of them but one have been identified and debunked.  The one EVP that we recorded that can't be explained is a fairly good one. It was recorded at 12:29 am in the projection room.  What makes this one unique is that the K2 meter also lit up at the same time and occurred right after Greg asked the question, "Was there a fire in here?". This EVP just adds to the mystery of the building and continued research is a must for this great theater. There were also personal experiences. Most of which were Kelly's.

In this video, Greg was documenting as Kenny and Robert investigate the old Masonic Temple/Pixy Theater. Robert and Kenny are facing each other in the masonic room on the third floor. Robert is twirling his glasses in his right hand when suddenly, they are smacked out of his hand, appear to hit the wall and come back down on the floor 6 or 7 feet away from Robert. Keep in mind that this room is completely dark to us. This special camera allows for viewing as it is equipped with infrared lighting only visible to the camera. This video evidence is corroborating with other evidence indicating to us that this old theater is haunted.
